Tides

Aim: This is to illustrate the effect of high and low tides.

Equipment: The equipment includes...

  • balloon.
  • Cotton
  • water.

Method: Tie a cotton thread around the neck of a balloon carrying water. Spin the balloon as fast as possible and watch the balloon change shape..

Background knowledge: The balloon may get thicker across its centre. This is due to a phenomenon called momentum. This is the effect of throwing the contents within the balloon outwards thus distorting the shape of the balloon. The Moon carries a lot of gravity which is the force of attraction holding planets in orbit around each other. As the Moon passes around the Earth the water on the Earth directly below it is attracted to it causing higher tides at these parts of the Earth and lower tides on the sides of the Earth.
